Fall is the Metal phase and respiratory / lung + large intestine phase. Breath work can really help nourish your lung qi — it strengthens respiratory function, cleanses the lungs, improves your protective “wei” qi (aka immunity) and also decreases general stagnation and stress in the body. These are all things you want to be doing to prevent illness and strengthen your immunity this fall! I’ll be sending out my full Lung Qi video routine in my newsletter later this month will an explanation of all these specific movements - but here’s a taste of some breathing exercises (qi gong) you can do at home to encourage your respiratory system to stay strong this season. Talking more about immunity tips - food and products - in stories this week as well! Love, Sarah 💗.

I haven’t said a proper hello in awhile and there are some new people here, so hi 👋 I’m Sarah! I’m a licensed acupuncturist with a certification in applied clinical nutrition. I’ve been practicing East Asian Medicine for 12 years in Austin and am currently on hiatus from my private practice - doing creative projects, sharing info with you here, doing some Skype consultations, and writing book content! I am passionate about holistic health, eastern medicine, mindfulness and having conversations about wellness, healing, food, motherhood, and how we are all trying our best. I have 2 little boys, a funny and musical husband named Adam, a love for design and style, I love books and am pretty introverted, and I really want to be a gardener although I have no natural talent for it (better with people!). I love helping people feel better and here @medicine_kitchen I want to help you cultivate health at home. Thanks for being here 💗💗.

I’m puttin up a highlight section for what I call “⚡️meals” which are photos of meals I make during the weeks with ingredients and simple methods included (just not full exact recipes) for those of you who are interested and need ideas for healthy eating. Medicine Kitchen started out as a convenient way to inspire my clients to stay healthy in between their acupuncture sessions - healthy eating & cooking is a big part of that. Hope it can foster some ideas to keep you all on track or get on the track to start with! Start where you are 💗. Have a great weekend!

A pediatric acupuncture session is usually more a combination of acupressure/bodywork, essential oils, a few baby needles perhaps, and a lot of love & curiosity. Kids are so responsive to energy medicine as their nervous and immune systems are still developing and not overburdened by decades of bad habits or stress… they are so adaptable to change. Treating my 4 yr old here today in this amazing twinkling light. So fun for me. ✨✨ For more tips on keeping the kids healthy this season check out my recent blog post for @lovechildmag up in my profile 👆🏻.

Oh how I love Gua Sha. It’s an ancient Chinese scraping technique used to increase blood flow & lymphatic drainage & relieve pain. It was also widely used for Chinese royal women as an anti-aging treatment to maintain their beautiful skin. Here’s a short and very fast video of my at-home facial gua sha routine! (Promise I’ll get better at these videos soon!) I’m now doing Facial Gua Sha add-ons to your acupuncture session upon request.❣️.

Releasing tension from the upper back and neck with 〰CUPPING〰. Cupping is one of the best deep-tissue therapies available. It’s a deeply relieving modality for tight muscles, emotional & physical blockages; sedating the nervous system, opening the lungs, transforming phlegm in the chest, chronic muscular pain & inflammation, and to simply to get the Qi and blood flow moving in your body. I practice glass fire cupping with gliding or fixed placement, depending on what your body needs - and I absolutely love it. The negative pressure that cupping provides can pull out lingering toxins from the muscles and tissue up to 4 inches below the skin level - leaving you feeling so relaxed and loose. Take your bodywork to the next level. ❤️

My private practice is based out of a lovely wellness center, Be Well Austin + Yoga House. We have two cozy bungalows side-by-side in Central Austin and our new happy waiting area in the Be Well Yoga House was just featured on @west_elm_austin today 😍. Both of our spaces are warm and welcoming and ideal environments for healing. Be Well has so much to offer - acupuncture, nutrition, myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, yoga + meditation classes. Feeling so grateful to be a part of this collective. ✨💫.

The 5 Elements (often called 5 Phases ) are WATER / WOOD / FIRE / EARTH / METAL. The Kidney organs are associated with our Water element. When the Kidney Qi is weak, there can be problems with water metabolism, urination, fertility, or sexuality. The color of the Kidney is black, like the night. When the Kidney Qi starts to weaken, dark circles or pouches appear under the eyes. The Kidney Qi rules in the winter, a time when living things are contracted with cold. Like a seed deep in the cold ground, Qi is dormant, waiting for the time to sprout. Longing for the coolness of Water on these hot Texas days & making a platter of tofu & black beans with seaweed and black sesame - steamed kale with tamari- roasted purple cabbage. 🌊🌑🌌🌀.
