I ate a version of this about 4x last week… it was the best lunch I’ve had in awhile including that rice cake 😂. It’s not easy eating gluten and dairy free all the time - it’s something I’m trying for my own health now and I don’t succeed 100% every day - although I did turn down some good AF Detroit style pizza last night, so 👏 for me. Planning beautiful, delicious lunches like this help. *Tip: when you have restrictions in your diet try buying 1-2 slightly indulgent ingredients for the week to make your meals feel special. It’s really helpful to add something fun when you have to take things away and will leave you feeling less short-handed. I did that this week with these pretty purple cilantro, kohlrabi & radish micro-greens… all my meals seemed so playful and inviting with them. // Collard leaf wrap with hummus, pecans, roasted sweet potatoes, leftover wild salmon, red cabbage kraut, micro greens, dulse flakes.

Artichoke monsters. I wish I could feed them one every day, maybe then they’d eventually get sick of them and actually leave some for me one day. :) Honestly, it’s one of my greatest pleasures watching my kids enjoy the favorite foods I enjoyed as a kid with my mom. Artichokes and mangos and pomegranates hold special memories, I remember it so vividly. I think because it was so experiential to eat these fun foods - like performing a ritual to get to the good stuff. Hoping to create memories for them too. .
.
Artichokes are known as a digestive aid that stimulate the appetite. They also help liver and gall bladder function by stimulating bile secretions, can lower serum cholesterol and have tons of anti-oxidants to help your body fight free radicals. @medicalmedium also says they play a crucial role in thyroid healing as certain compounds can act as a protective shield for the thyroid gland - guarding it from viruses and pathogens. Pretty interesting. So delicious too. ❤️.

This is fascinating - I encourage you to read on // A beautiful part of Chinese medicine is that there is an aspect of our spirit connected to each organ system in our bodies - it fully integrates mind, body & spirit on a founding level. 🧡. The Yi is the part of our spirit-mind that is intellect/ thought / analysis / mental processing and mental “digestion”, if you will. The Yi is actually tied to our digestive organs- the spleen and stomach of the Earth element which is about rooting ourselves and feeding ourselves. Which makes sense when you think about digestion - we can digest food but we also digest information and content. Do you ever feel like your appetite gets affected by stress? Nervous stomach? IBS that is worse with stress or over-working? This is incredibly common. Sometimes we over-eat or over-think (the latter actually seems more common these days). Most people don’t realize that these two things can damage the same system in our bodies! Our bodies do not like to work on mental & physical digestion at the same time. Gut and digestive issues are widely popular and we are consuming more information than ever before. This is a huge health challenge of our time. 🧡. 2018 is an Earth year and one of my missions this year is to create something beautiful for you all to help swing this pendulum of thought —— worry —— (in)digestion back to health.🧡.

Cooking is a form of meditation for me. It lets me be fully in the moment and in the flow. I am aware of all smells, sounds, motions, textures, flavors. I’m aware of the intention I’m setting with my meal and the attention I’m giving myself by cooking something nourishing. Everything else kind of slips away. In the end, it feels good & helpful to feed people. It connects my body, my mind, my spirit. What gets you into your flow in your life? I think it’s so different for us all and I’d love to hear yours. ❤️❤️

Early morning infusion. Infusions are just basically really strong teas. Steep them for several hours to get the most benefit from the herbs and drink daily for therapeutic effect. This is nettle leaf, dulse, goji berry, astragalus, holy basil to build blood, qi, calm the nervous system & stimulate hair growth. I lost so much hair after Judd was born & recently got all my hormones tested and it was fascinating to see what my body has been up to on that level. Post-partum self care is so essential you guys. Please don’t deplete yourself like I did and end up recovering for years. This has been one of the biggest lessons of my life. Even drinking a simple infusion like this during your fourth trimester can make a huge difference. ❤️

I read this passage recently and it hit home more than ever. It’s something I struggle with. Although I try my best most days - it’s a challenge to always stay mindful as a mom with the kids, as a partner in a marriage, with myself and my health, with social media and daily life… it’s good to be reminded that if we give our loved ones our genuine attention - give our goals or work projects, friendships, homes, bodies or health our attention- they will rise to that and bloom more than ever. How do you tune in and be more mindful with yourself and others? I’ve been working on something special to help with this & can’t wait to share with you soon. 💗

Lunch with this Turmeric Carrot Ginger & Blood Orange sauce. I say this a million times to clients - but eat more warmed and cooked foods! Even when you make a salad like this - incorporate some cooked elements into it. Here I have warm pan roasted chickpeas in harissa and za’atar spices, roasted salmon + purple cauliflower, blanched green beans and my sauce has a heavy dose of ginger in it. Warmed and steamed foods + gentle spices really help the digestion to function at its best. Cold, frozen and excessive raw foods can slow down your metabolism and put out your “digestive fire” over time. ❤️

It’s really hard to say goodbye to almond milk. I wish I didn’t have to. Now I’m stuck making homemade hemp milk every week! It’s fine. It works like a charm in smoothies. I mean, when am I ever just drinking a big glass of any kind of milk, to be honest? Never. But I’m still bummed, almond milk was my jam. Did you know that almonds are one of the highest oxalate foods? If you have any kind of thyroid imbalance, especially thyroid nodules (yours truly), or kidney stones you may want to avoid foods highest in oxalates - they are small molecules that have the ability to form crystals which can deposit in different areas of the body, often in kidney tissue and the thyroid gland. Oxalate foods in moderation are usually no big deal for most people, especially if you’ve never had thyroid or kidney issues - but milking or juicing a large amount of them can cause overload. So… I’m cutting out the almonds! I like a cashew / hemp seed milk blend as well. Anyone have another seed milk favorite? Sunflower perhaps? Please send them my way. ❤️. .
.
.
Pretty Great Instant Hemp Milk 😉: ½ C shelled hemp seeds, 3 C cold filtered water, ½ tsp vanilla extract, 1 pitted date, a few turns of the pink salt shaker. Blend it all on HIGH for awhile until it’s totally smooth and super frothy! Chill.
